The Healthy Farm Index

The Healthy Farm Index  (Quinn et al. 2012) is a tool for monitoring biodiversity and ecosystem services to track ecological change as a function of farming practices in an individual’s farmland. More specifically, the HFI is tool for the farmer to monitor crop rotations, birds, and other conservation indicators and understand how they improve soil, water, and environmental health.  Farms and ranches are the largest use of land in Nebraska, and thus play a vital role in sustaining food, fiber, and natural resource systems that support a bio-based economy. A better understanding of change at the farm scale can contribute to regional conservation efforts.
